With over twenty years of preschool experience, from teacher to the Assistant Director of the Alabama Office of School Readiness, Melissa Scarpate helped to write the first Alabama four-year-old performance standards and helped to revise the early learning guidelines. She has worked both in classrooms and with the Alabama Governor’s office and legislature building quality Pre-K programs.
Melissa earned her PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Auburn University and was privileged to do research at Cambridge University in England with the Play in Education, Learning and Development (PEDAL) research center. With the Cambridge Neuroscience Department, she recently published a study on brain-analysis during mother-infant play. She is a Pedagogy of Play fellow at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and has worked collaboratively with the Lego Foundation.
